Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner en route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, carrying 232 passengers and 12 crew members. The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

The aircraft went down in the Meghani area, near the airport, with emergency services immediately responding to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a dark plume of smoke rising from the crash site. According to a statement from the Director of Civil Aviation, a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and assess the full extent of casualties.

While official confirmation on casualties is pending, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of Boeing 787 aircraft and air travel safety standards in India. Aviation experts suggest that preliminary investigations will focus on potential mechanical failures, weather conditions at the time of takeoff, and possible human error. The incident is expected to lead to a review of safety protocols at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and potentially across other airports in India. In the near term, delays and disruptions are anticipated for flights departing from and arriving at Ahmedabad.
