CD Projekt Red is officially moving forward with 'Cyberpunk 2', the sequel to 'Cyberpunk 2077', under the codename 'Project Orion'. The game shifts from the conceptual phase to pre-production during spring of 2025, with plans to expand the Cyberpunk universe.

CD Projekt Red's sequel to 'Cyberpunk 2077', now referred to as 'Cyberpunk 2', has entered pre-production. While 'Cyberpunk 2' isn't the final title, the studio confirms it as the next installment in the franchise. According to an earnings report released on May 28, 2025, the project, previously known as 'Project Orion', is being developed by CD Projekt Red's Boston and Vancouver studios.

Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original 'Cyberpunk' tabletop RPG, revealed that 'Project Orion' will feature a new major city described as 'Chicago gone wrong,' offering a contrast to Night City's aesthetic. Pondsmith, who is providing feedback on the scripts, noted the new city will have a distinct atmosphere, diverging from Night City’s cyberpunk noir feel.

'Cyberpunk 2077' had a rocky launch but has since been significantly improved through updates and expansions, garnering a dedicated player base. The decision to expand the 'Cyberpunk' universe reflects CD Projekt Red's confidence in the franchise's potential.

Industry analysts predict 'Cyberpunk 2' could be a major commercial success, leveraging the lessons learned from its predecessor and the expanded creative vision. The new setting and continued involvement of Mike Pondsmith generates excitement among fans, who anticipate fresh narratives within the established universe.
