Nigerian aviation unions, including NUATE, are voicing concerns over anti-union tactics by Turkish Airlines, welfare packages for aviation workers, and excessive IGR deductions, which may lead to a crisis within the aviation sector. The issues were raised during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebrations and subsequent statements.

The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has cautioned Turkish Airlines against victimizing union members, while also criticizing domestic airlines for denying workers' rights to unionize. NUATE President, Comrade Ben Nnabue, vowed to take action to protect workers' rights and called on authorities to address these issues. In related news, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) announced plans to commence an improved welfare package for its staff, aiming to create a supportive environment for workers. However, NUATE also decried the federal government's deduction of 50% of aviation agencies' internally generated revenue (IGR), warning of potential harm to agency survival and aviation safety.

Comrade Ben Nnabue stated, "All the government agencies in aviation remain without governing boards of directors, depriving the agencies of magnifying ideas and stultifying long term planning."

These developments occur amidst ongoing concerns about labor practices and financial stability within Nigeria's aviation industry. The unresolved issues surrounding the airports concession program and the lack of governing boards further compound the challenges faced by aviation agencies.

Looking ahead, NUATE has committed to fighting for the rights and interests of aviation workers, seeking a stronger and more prosperous industry. The implementation of improved welfare packages by NAMA could set a positive precedent, while the resolution of IGR deduction issues will be crucial for the financial health and operational capabilities of aviation agencies.
